Thanks weekly NY JAPION for 20 years and 8 months!

 4月は多忙で体調崩してしまって報告が遅れたのですが、実は4月第一週で私が20年と８ヶ月連載させて頂いてた週刊NYジャピオンの漫画連載が終了しました。幸運にも商業誌でいきなり漫画家になり、更にNYでこんな長期間の連載をすることになるとは本当に感謝しかないです。

４コマ漫画1本だけとはいえ、週間連載は正直私には大変でした。寂しい気持ちと共にホッとしています。

だって毎週締め切りがないんだよ？

この開放感たるや！

ジャピオンの中では最長連載だったのでこのままずっと続くのかなあとかぼんやり思ってたのです。2003年7月から通算で1000回目の連載まであとちょっとだったので、実は終了のメールが来たときは少し残念でした。

初期2003年頃は白黒インクの紙面で手書きのペン画でスクリーントーンを使って毎週か隔週でマンハッタンの編集部まで原稿を届けていました。

2004年くらいからデータ入稿になり日本に滞在しても仕事を続けれてました。

紙面がカラーになってからは漫画もカラーになりフォトショで色をつけるようになりました。でも下書きとペン入れはまだ手描きだったし、ペン入れはまだライトボックス的なものを使っていました。この頃から随分作業が楽になったな。今思えばスクリーントーンの作業は本当に手間でしたね。

その後はフォトショ使用からクリップスタジオになりタブレットもインティオスからシンティック、ワコムワン。

小さな子供がいて海外移住したり親が急逝したり色々乗り越えなきゃなことがあったけど、それでもなんとか続けれるペースでできたのが本当に幸いだった。編集担当もゆるくて助かった。

ジャピオンでの連載は対象読者が一般日本人向けだったのですが今後はオタクな内容の漫画をマイペースで描いていきたいと思います。

それと美術作品の方に戻りたい。

とりあえず今日はここまで。

Fabric with a Big Drawing from the Big Apple: making facemasks project

In March-April 2020, Queens, NYC where I live became the center of Covid-19 pandemic in the world, and the residents including myself were in a situation that some of acquaintances were hospitalized or some of friends died. Everyone felt the fear of this illness in real close. I was planning to hold outdoor events and comic cons as usual, but of course all of them were canceled. I started to continue to make facemasks with my leftover cloth and donate them to my community. I couldn't make anything other than facemasks. 

Fortunately, I received two offers. One was inviting to group art show, One Big Drawing. Then I created this project: Fabric with a Big Drawing from the Big Apple.

The On Big Drawing was curated by Friedhard Kiekeben and Jennifer Shaw. Thank you very much for the opportunity. This website is like an archive for me, as it introduces my past works.

The group exhibition was originally planned at the Chicago Columbia University Gallery, but due to Covid-19, it became an online exhibition.

Without this offer, I wouldn't have been able to make a new work in 2020, so I'm very grateful.

For this group exhibition, I digitally portrayed my experience during the 2020 NYC pandemic in manga. The motifs include ambulance sirens, N95 masks, rubbing alcohol, unemployment insurance websites, friends who started community group to secure foods, making cloth facemasks, and fireworks on Independence Day seen through the rear window.

I printed this manga on an organic cotton fabric and made masks from it. Each mask is a part of the manga. These unique 50 masks don’t have same pattern.

You can only see the whole manga on a digital device, and the manga is actually 100 cm wide and 300 cm long. So if you zoom in with your fingers on your device, you can see the more details. I you have Dropbox account, you can experience the manga here.

Also in December 2020, ArtBase88 in Fukuoka invited me to a group exhibition called Beyond New Border 2020. This was an online exhibition too.

Next, here is a link to the group exhibition Spring Forward for Women's Month in March 2021. Curators were Heidi Russell and Arantxa X. Rodriguez. Thanks for having me!

This was an exhibition in person in two years. I was relieved to think that the pandemic had passed its peak. However, it was not easy to display and manage the digital manga, so I exhibited only the facemasks at the show.

2020年３−４月に私の住む地域は世界のコロナパンデミックの中心地になり、私を含めた住人は知り合いに必ず入院者が出たり友人の知り合いに亡くなった方がいるような状況になりました。誰もがこの病気の怖さを手に取れるようなリアルさで感じていたのです。私は例年通りに屋外イベントやコミコンなどをする予定でしたが当然全てキャンセルになり私は手持ちの布でマスクを作り寄付する日々が続いていました。マスク以外のものは作れない精神状態でした。

そんな中に幸運にも二つのオファーがきました。そのうちの一つがこのプロジェクトです。　2020年12月にサイトがリリースしました。

On Big Drawing という名前のグループ展です。学芸員さんは Friedhard Kiekebenと　Jennifer Shaw。どうもありがとうございました。

ロシカゴコンビア大学ギャラリーでのグループ展の予定でしたが、パンデミックのせいでオンラインのみの展示になりました。

このオファーがなかったら私は2020年は新作を作れていなかったのでとても感謝しています。

このグループ展のために、2020年のNYCでのパンデミック中での経験をデジタルで漫画に描きました。救急車のサイレン、N95マスク、消毒用のアルコール、失業保険のサイト、配給のランチ、地域サポートを始めた友人、手作りマスク、裏窓から見えた独立記念日の花火などがモチーフになっています。

この漫画を布にプリントしてそこからマスクを作成しました。マスクはそれぞれ漫画の一部であり約50個作成したうち同じ柄は一つもないユニークなものになっています。

デジタルデバイスでしか漫画全体像は見られないのですが、実はこの漫画のサイズは横100cm 300cmあります。ですからデバイスを指で拡大していくと、細かいディテールが見れるようになっています。データが大きいのですがDropboxを持っている方はここで見る事ができます。

次に紹介したいのは、2021年3月の女性月間に合わせたグループ展Spring Forward です。学芸員はHeidi RussellとArantxa X. Rodriguez。

これは2年ぶりのリアル展示でした。パンデミックもピークをすぎたのだと思い、正直ホッとしました。しかしデジタル展示用として作った作品は展示方法も管理も難しく、マスクのみの展示になりました。

世界中から50人の女性作家が参加するこの紹介ビデオぜひ見てください。最初の１分で会場の様子がわかります。そのあと約３０秒ずつ各作家のコメントが入ります。多様な国からの多様な作家さんの紹介が素晴らしいです。私は6分30秒くらいに出ています。

Brooklyn Comic Con 2019

先週末、ブルックリンコミコンに、運よく参加できたのですが
とても気に入ったのでご報告。まず会場は駅から徒歩７分くらいの場所で公園が隣にあります。これは気持ちよくて良いね！マンハッタンからもクイーンズからも行きやすいです。

写真は、５時５０分ごろ、もうお客さんが減っているときに撮ったので
あまり盛況に見えないかもだけど、実際にはそこそこにはお客さんが来ていたし
１１時オープン時のために列が１０時から出来ていました。

これは普通のコミコンベンダーやアーティストテーブルの風景ですけど、

こんなポールダンスのスペースがある。右側奥にはスーパーマーケットのプリントのバナーがあって、左右と奥は本物の水とかソーダ缶の商品が積まれてて、なんか面白い空間。

時々ダンサーがパフォーマンスするけど、誰が踊って参加してもおっけ。

ここもポップなサロン風の空間。こんな写真取るのに楽しい空間がコミコンのあちこちにある。

 これはドリンクバー。大概のコミコンだとスナックや飲み物が高額だけど、ここはソーダが２ドル、ビールが５ドルと、安いので気軽にバンバン買える。

ここら辺は、いわゆるビデオゲームコーナー。ゲームが乗ってる箱って、多分牛乳箱みたいなので、手作り感満載。このゆるさが良い。

カードゲームのプレイコーナーもあったけど、あまりやってなかった。

 何故かメインステージはレスリングのリングになっており、（右にはバウンシーハウス）

コスプレしながら、みんな適当に戦って遊んでた。それがめっちゃ面白くて観客はみんな見てた。（写真はもう終盤なので普通の格好の人が写っているけど）
ちなみにパネルとかもここでやる。なんかすごく良くない？？パネルやってない時はここでみんな好きに走り回ってた。男性陣、少年に戻ってはしゃぐ、の巻。

 外にもバウンシーハウス。子供も大人も遊んでいる。ストリートフェアなどのバウンシーハウスは、お子様たちに独占されて、大人は出来ないけど、ここでは大人も遊べる！

 ブルックリンぽい？おしゃれなフードベンダー。ケイジャンフードとか。
大人気だった。写真は終盤なので人が写ってないけど。

 再び屋内。アーティストテーブルの合間にある、こういうストリートフェアにある、ボール投げゲームもある。マトに当たると、椅子に座っている人が落ちるタイプのやつ。

アーケードゲームの躯体も数体。懐かしゲーム系。ここも人気で列出来てた。

 唯一の企業ブース。なんかのゲームに参加して、大きないわゆるコミコンによくある、でっかいロゴの入ってるバッグがもらえるんだけど、どうせならガイコのオリジナルコミックスのプリントにすれば良かったのに、とも思った。

こんな感じの、
「マリオを横長にプレイしてみたかった！」てな夢を手作りで実現している。こういったコーナーがあちこちに点在している。インディーズのゲームもあった。


小さいコミコンって、アーティストテーブル、ベンダー、パネル、ワークショップ、というのがおおよそのメニューなんだけど、つまりそれは主にオーラルコミュニケーションだよね。だけどここにはフィジカルなゲームのコミュニケーションがあった。そこがすごく新しく感じました。客層は、高齢者から（多分近所の方でここであるイベントにはいつもくる感じじゃないかな）家族、学生さんぽい方々、色々。
小さいコミコンにありがちな、「ひととおり会場を見て、自分の好きなもの買ったらあとはだらだらと、話をして過ごす」時間を潰す、ってあるじゃないですか？
ここなら本当に一日遊べる感じでした。主催の方々が、どんなコミコンをやりたいかっていうのがすごーく良くわかって微笑ましいコミコンだった。子供の頃に楽しくて遊んで、でも大きくなったらやりにくい遊びをここに持って来ておもちゃ箱にしたようなコミコン。

ここでちょっとイヤミいうよ？
郊外の地域起こしとしてのコミコンあるよね？
コミコンやれば盛り上がるから、漫画やコミックの大ファンじゃないイベント担当者がやるやつ。で、若い貧乏アーティストやアート学校の学生からテーブルフィーとるやつ。私のところにも無料テーブルで交通費出すから来てくださいとかメール来ているよ。
そういう大人は、このブルックリンコミコンを見て学んで欲しいです。
ゲームやコミック文化への健全な愛が詰まってますから。

心配なのはコレ、おそらく赤字だろうなって事です。
入場料を取るイベントですけど、スポンサー企業あと２つくらい欲しかったよね。第一回目でよくガイコ取れましたね。偉いです。でも積んであった残りの水とソーダとビールの箱の数を見たら、多分見積もったお客さんに届かなかったんだろうなと思った。
なんとか来年もやって続けていって欲しいです。応援します。

Rica's Original mini Calender 2019!

Thank you very much for supporting Aliens in New York, Peekaboo-art project in 2018!

I couldn’t draw any funds to Aliens in New York for fiscal year 2018, so there was only one time event in New York Botanical Garden in May with payment from NYBG.

Besides, I started two new projects, One Stop Family Pop Up and StopGap Ramp Project NYC.

One of reasons I started Aliens in NY was I believe empathy is very important to us.

We should emphasize with other people who is in difficulty but trying to make better world.

The themes for the project were LGBTQ, diversity, and pregnant women, etc.

One of my challenges was how toencourage people to take daily action after interacting with the project.

I was seeking new ways to develop the project. 

Last year, I collaborated with other organization UP-Stand, which installs practical accommodations for mothers and families. I felt I could learn a lot of new methods to develop the art project there.

I decided to carry the two new projects rather than the art project for a while.

I believe these all experiences will help me further develop my art project.

2019年のオリジナルミニカレンダーが出来ました。

いつもAliens in New Yorkのアートプロジェクトを応援してくださってどうもありがとうございます。
今年はどこからも資金繰りができず、イベントは５月のNY植物園での一回のみとなりました。

しかしながらAliens in New York の他に、二つのアートではないプロジェクトをスタートしました。
One Stop Family Pop Up とStopGap Ramp Project NYCです。

Aliens in New York の目的は自分ではない他人になる想像をして共感を持つことです。共感を持つことが他人同士の歩み寄りになり話し合いを可能にし、より良い社会を作って行くと信じています。私の課題はAliens in New York に参加したアート経験を、どうやって参加者の実生活の中に取り込んでもらって生かして行くのか、ということでした。

One Stop Family Pop Up とStopGap Ramp Project NYCは、参加者の生活に直接関わるプロジェクトです。その運営を通じて、いつものアートとは離れた様々な人たちと出会っています。この学びをいつか自分のアートに役に立てたいと考えています。ブログをご高覧いただければ幸いです。
