Rica Takashima's Et Cetera : Aozora Art

Something that is ordinary to one person can be a strange practice to others. At the same time, that strange practice can be exciting to yet another. Rica wants to express the differences between cultures as something fun and exciting, rather than as creating conflict and friction.

In 1995, Rica started drawing the semi-autobiographical Manga portraying everyday lives of lesbians, in Japan’s premier lesbian magazine at that time. She struggled with her sexuality since her young age, but there were no movies/novels with themed positive lesbian stories even in 1980s. Her questions towards traditional Japanese patriarchal family values and discrimination against LGBT motivated her to start to draw conceptual Manga to public. Her project Manga book was published in 2003 and 2012 in English and Japanese, and Italian version in 2011. After she immigrated to the US with her family in 2008, she collaborates her work with Pride March, NewFEST LGBT film festival, and other diverse organizations.

She also created manga illustrations of We Can Do It! series, which encourages women in diversity.

Rica, Miho and Meechan Cat was awarded as Demystifying NFTs by Technology Gap and New York Foundation for the Arts, 2022

Her interactive public installation Aliens in New York has been supported by New York Foundation for the Arts since 2013 which Rica started in Tokyo Harajuku open street since 1994.(The name at the time was Aozora Art/Blue Sky Art)

Aozora Art: Blue Sky Art 30th Anniversary!（Peek-a-boo Art project）

2024 is the 30th anniversary of Aozora Art(Blue Sky Art/ Peek-a-boo Art project）, which started in August 1994.

Is this really art? I started this interactive art project with the participation of passersby, although I was wondering if it was art or not.

It is an art project that asks not art fans but “passers-by” questions such as what family is, what marriage is, and what gender is. The name “social practice” is now attached to this genre of art project.

If you were something/someone other than yourself, how would you feel and how would things be different from the way you are now? It is a basic concept form that invites people to imagine this.

This year, in celebration of its 30th anniversary, I will hold “Who is Miura? part 2”. “Who is Miura?” is a legendary work that Miura fans went crazy for at the Aomori Museum of Art in 2000.

This is the Harajuku pedestrian street, Aozora Art(Blue Sky Art/ Peek-a-boo Art project）, for the second time, maybe.

I remember we held the first season of the art project at Omotesando side of Harajuku.

The artist asked passersby to “Create your ideal family, and get a commemorative photo!” Participants choosed their favorite family members on a family sheet, and a “Peek-a-boo board” to match each family member. Then, we took their family photo with an instant film camera. The participant was asked to sign the photo as a family member on the spot. One photo is given away and one was kept to us for preservation.

This “family menber” was almost a replica of the actual composition of grandparents, parents, and sisters. And they actually took a picture of them with their faces out of that roll's Peek-a-boo boards.

1994年の8月に始めたあおぞらアートの３０周年になりました。

これってはたしてアートなのか？と自分でもわからず始めた通行人参加型のインタラクティブアート。

家族とは何か、婚姻とは何か、性別とは何か、などをアートファンではなく「通りすがりの人」に問いかけるアート。今ではソーシャルプラクティスという名前もこのジャンルのアートについた。

自分が自分以外の何者かになったら、どう感じたりどんなふうに今とは違うことがあるのか。それを想像してもらうアートです。

今年は３０周年記念に青森県立美術館での名作「みうらさん？」（2000）の第二弾ができそうです♪近々お伝えできると思います。

この家族写真は原宿歩行者天国　あおぞらアート、2回目かな？？

この日も晴れ。最初は表参道でやっていたっけなあ。

アーティストは「あなたにとって理想の家族を作ってみよう」と通行人に問いかける。参加者は、家族シートに好きな家族構成とそれぞれの家族メンバーに合わせた顔出しくんを選ぶ。そして家族写真を撮る。インスタントカメラで撮ってその場で参加者には家族としての証明サインをしてもらう。一枚は差し上げて、一枚はこちらで保存用にした。

この「家族」は、ほぼ実際の祖父母、両親、姉妹の構成をなぞらえていた。そして実際にそのロールの顔出しくんから顔を出して撮影した。

Open Call Artistsアーティスト募集だよ！

まさか自分がオープンコールをすることになるとは想像もしてませんでした。

でもまあやったら楽しそうって思っちゃったので、やることにしました。

昨日もたまたま、ツイッターで、お母さんアーティストは外出できないから

見えない存在になっている、って話をしてて

子育てを通じて人生で色々気がつかなかった事に気がついて

でもそれを表現する時間も場所もなかったりして

そういうのがもったないというか

既存のアートシーンではハマらないアートの概念があるんじゃん？とか思って

それが一体何かはまだ手探りですけど、とにかくやってみる事にしました。

まだまだ未熟で企画のための満足のいく予算が取れてないですけど

それはまあ来年あたりはなんとかなると思ってます。

いろんな嬉しいことが起こってて、頭がうまく回りませんけど

また落ち着いたら追加で書き込もうと思います。

This photograph is from the very first art project “Order Made Family” that I hold in 1995.

Nikki’s Family: Order Made Family, Peekaboo art project

Photograph 1995

Due to my questions that many Japanese people still persist an idea of patriarchal stereotype family, I held Order Made Family, a participatory public art project, on the street in Tokyo. The project asked passersby to define the word family. Would it involve living together, or being related to each other by blood, financial ties, or emotional bonds? Each participant chose from a list of possible individuals of who would embody their ideal family picture. These individuals neither had to be parallel to their actual family make-up, nor did the artwork have to visually match the label or identity of that family member. Then they had to pick Peekaboo-sculptures to present each of the individuals they had selected.

Now, numbering over 100, these life-sized Peekaboo-sculptures include various ages, races, and nationalities. The Peekaboo-sculpture selected didn’t have to reflect the actual age, sex, race, or nationality, or even animated creature state of that family member who, in turn, already may not mirror the participant’s actual family make-up. After each Peekaboo-sculpture had been picked, it was labeled to identify who that sculpture represents in the family. I asked other passersby to help sticking their faces through the Peekaboo-sculptures to take their virtual family pictures. Commemorative photographs that match the numbers of participants were taken with instant camera, and the photograph was given to each participant as a souvenir.

Resulting family portraits included members who were multinational, same-sex, cohabitating friends, and even aliens in addition to more traditional combinations, all of were borderless and explored modern interpretations of the definition of family.

This Nikki’s family photograph is one from about 800 family portraits that taken at Order Made Family during 1994-2000 in Harajuku, Shinjuku, and Kouenji in Tokyo, Japan.

I am working on writing Manga report of my art project “Aliens in New York” 2015.

“Aliens in New York” project is an audience participatory public art which I started the art style in Harajuku Tokyo since 1994. I have poured my art life to the project. The aim is to provide art experience to community, being and imagine transforming to other people using Peekaboo-board art devices, promoting mutual understandings among different ethnicities, religions, races, genders, and other social standings, and making better life, place and future.

いつものNYジャピオンでの４コマ漫画以外での私の漫画を読む年に一回のチャンスです。今年も昨年に引き続き「Aliens in New York」アートプロジェクトのレポ―ト漫画にとりかかっています。

カラー18から25ページくらいの予定です。この漫画は2015年の1月から12月31日まで3ドル以上の寄付をしてプロジェクトを支えて下さった方にPDF版をさしあげます。

このアートプロジェクトは、1994年原宿から始めた観客参加型のパブリックアート「あおぞらアート」の進化形で、私の作家生命を注いでいます。タイトルは2010年に青森県立美術館さんで展示した「Aliens from New York」がきっかけとなりました。コンセプはト他民族や性差年齢差などのユニークなダイバシティに理解共鳴することで、地より良い域コミュニティを構築する事です。

2015年は、ワークショップは４回で119人、顔出しクンの楽しい参加型展示を全部で5000人以上の方に届けることができました。ボランティアでは10人以上の方が協力して下さいました。

例えばワークショップの開催には一回あたり最低で300ドルが必要です。
