This time, I received the NFT Art Award sponsored by the NY Art Foundation(NYFA) and Technology Gap.

There will be a real (IRL) Manhattan exhibit and a Metaverse exhibit from December 15-31.

This Voxel Metaverse can be enjoyed on your usual mobile phone or computer without a crypto wallet or VR device. 

If you have never experienced Metaverse, please take this opportunity to visit the exhibition at metaverse. Art NFT of various genres such as video, performance, music, and literature will be exhibited. I am thrilled for the first time to exhibit at the Metaverse.

 

There will be an opening party at the Metaverse on December 15th from 6-9pm.Eastern time.

About my work, “Rica, Miho and Mee-chan Cat” from “Tokyo Love: Rica ‘tte Kanji!?”

The GIF animation of the youth lesbian couple "Rica and Miho," drawn for the cover of Anise magazine fall 1996 (Japan’s premier lesbian magazine at the time), with various colorful versions of the chibi characters with cat ears.

 

I started drawing the manga when I was in Japan. At that time, the only place Japanese lesbians gathered were in bars. So the characters in the manga I drew were only Japanese. 

 

But after the manga was published in English translation, I realized that readers of various diversities love my manga and they projected themselves onto the Japanese lesbian characters. 

When I started to create new NFT art, I thought if I can make the lesbian couple in various colors and animate them? So, I added a colorful chibi character with cat ears to the illustration and made it a simple GIF animation. These chibi characters represent my readers. I want to express my gratitude to you.

 

The original book of “TOKYO LOVE: Rica tte’ Kanji!?” became a permanent collection at  Kyoto International Manga Museum and Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan

こんにちは！
この度、NY芸術財団(NYFA)、Technology Gapの主催するNFT Art Award を受賞しました。

12月１５−３１までマンハッタンのリアル展示とメタバースでの展示があります。

このVoxel メタバースは、クリプトウォレットやVR専用デバイスがなくても、普段使っている携帯電話やパソコンで楽しむ事が出来ます。メタバースを体験した事がない方はこの機会に是非参加してみてください映像、パフォーマンス、音楽、文学など様々なジャンルのアートNFTが出展される予定です。私もメタバースでの展示は初めてなのでワクワクしています。

 

メタバースで12月15日６−９pm（米国東時間、日本時間では朝８−10時）にオープニングパーティがあります。メタバースのオープニングってどんな感じになるんでしょうね。全く想像できません。

私が出展する作品“Rica, Miho and Mee-chan Cat”について：

1996年秋のアニースの表紙に描きおろしたレズビアンカップル「リカとミホ」のイラストを中心に猫耳チビキャラの二人を様々なカラフルにしてGIFアニメにしました。「リカとミホ」は漫画「Tokyo Love: Rica ‘tte Kanji!?」に出てくる登場人物です。

 

1996年当時、私は漫画を日本で描いていたため漫画の登場人物は全員が日本人です。漫画が英訳出版された後はさまざまなダイバシティの読者に読んでもらうことができました。そして読者さん達は、漫画の日本人のレズビアンカップルのキャラクターに自分自身を投影して読んでくれていることに気がつきました。そこで猫耳がついたカラフルなダイバシティのちびキャラをイラストにつけたしてシンプルなアニメにしてみました。このちびキャラ達は読者の皆さんを象徴しています。読者の皆さんへの私の感謝を込めています。

 

英語版の漫画本「Rica ‘tte Kanji!?」は京都国際漫画美術館、福岡アジア美術館のパーマネントコレクションになっています。

Late note for Flame Con 2022

It's quite late, but here are my impressions of Flame Con on August 20th and 21st.

Actually, even though I've been a guest before, it was my first time having my own table at the Flame Con this year.

It was an unforgettable weekend with many wonderful things happening.

 

First and foremost, I provided the cover, back cover, and inside illustrations for 

By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Manga, written by one of my best friends, Erica Friedman. We did signing together at the table.

Erica's book sold well and almost sold out on the first day. 

"Twenty years ago this would never have happened. I had to explain to everyone what 'Yuri' was, but now everyone knows" she said. Erica held YuriCon in NJ in 2003, but it was really too early. I think people who participated in that event were able to experience a really rare experience.

If I hadn't met Erica by chance in 2001, I wouldn't be who I am today. Every time I talk about it with Erica, we say that it was fate that we met at a lesbian bar in Manhattan.

When there was no line and I have a time,

I draw a portrait in my manga style for a customer.

It is a fun 3min-drawing!

At AnimeNYC last year, a visitor who was cosplaying of Kakegurui masked student council member bought the first volume of my book Tokyo Love: Rica ‘tte Kanji, and then came to buy the all sequel, wanting to read the continuation of the story. She showed a real face this time, but I knew it was her right away and I thought it was amazing LOL. I was impressed that she dropped by my table of the Comic Con where you had to pay an admission.

Others brought the very first original English version of Rica 'tte Kanji, published in 2003, and asked to sign it. I'm really happy to think that she didn't throw away the old books for 20 years and kept them on the bookshelf, and that she came to see me with the book!

Also, I met an artist who drew fan art and gave it to me! I love her drawing style and the color. This encourages me a lot.!!!!! @oliviorbb Check out her Instagram pls!

Jennifer Camper, Carlo Quispe, so on friends from before came to see us, and it was a reunion after Covid. Oh, I'm glad I have friends, I am a member of the community here, I thought.

 

Flame Con as a whole, was great place LGBTQ+ can enjoy safety, however, there weren't many authors and artists selling stories about female couples, love, issues, etc. so I hope there will be more for next year.

    Useless addition：

It was my first time to attend a Comic Con table since AnimeNYC last year, but last year at that time, I was actually in the worst physical condition, so I took harsh medicine every day and managed to get through 3 days. But now I'm not having migraine headaches or bladder pain, and I've recovered quite a bit and been able to participate in Flame Con, which is one of the good things.

かなり遅れてしまったけど、8月20,21のFlame Conの感想です。
実は今までゲストになった事はあってもFlame Conで自分のテーブルを持つのは初めてでした。

素敵なことがたくさん起き忘れられない思い出の週末になりました。

なんといってもまずは私が表紙、裏表紙と中のイラストを提供した、親友の一人であるErica Friedmanが出版したBy Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Anime and Mangaをテーブル販売し、そこで一緒にsinging した事です。

エリカの本は好調に売れて初日はほぼ売り切れになりました。「20年前だったらこんな事はありえなかった。まず“Yuri”って何かをみんなに説明しなきゃいけなかったけど、今はもうみんなが知っている」2003年にEricaはYuriConをNJで開催したけ俺ど、それは本当に時期が早すぎたんだよね。あれに参加した方は本当にレアな経験を体験できたんだと思う。

Ericaさんと偶然2001年に出会っていなかったら今の私は無いのです。いつもエリカとその話をするたびにあの出会いは宿命だったねえ、と言っています。エリカと出会いの神様に感謝です。

混んでない時は本を買ってくれた方の似顔絵描いています。

３分くらいの早描き。楽しいです。

昨年のAnimeNYCでKakeguruiの仮面の生徒会のコスプレをしてたお客さんが1巻目を買ってくれて、で、お話の続きが読みたいって続きを買いに来てくれました。今回は素顔できてくれたんだけどすぐに彼女だってわかった私もすごいって思ったLOL 。入場料を払って入るコミコンのお店にわざわざ来てくれるって感動しちゃったよ。

他にも2003年に最初に出版されたオリジナルの英語版Rica ‘tte Kanjiを持って来てサインしてと言ってくれた方もいた。20年も昔の本を捨てないで本棚においてくれていたんだ、そして会いに来てくれたんだって思うと本当に嬉しい。

それとね、ファンアートを描いてくれた作家さんがいた！こういうのすごく励みになります。

Flame Con全体では、女性カップルのお話を売る作家さんはあまりいなくて寂しかったので、もっともっと増えて欲しいなと思っています。

次回は10月29日のWomen in Comics @Bronx Library Centerで会いましょう♪

蛇足：

昨年のAnimeNYC以来のコミコンテーブル参加だったけど、昨年は実は体調は最悪で、キツイ薬を毎日飲んでなんとか3日こなした。だけど今は偏頭痛も膀胱痛も起きなくてかなり回復して参加する事が出来て、それも良かったことの一つです。
